Jarvis wished the general would just deliver his rant and piss off. Did they really have to relive every detail of the assignment, blow by blow? So far, they’d only just gotten to the part when he and Eddie busted down the door of the basement room where Piripi had been hiding. The bitching and moaning which unfolded just to get to this point, had given Jarvis a headache.

“So who authorized entry to the room?” Lancaster had been surprisingly civil so far. Jarvis guessed the general knew he’d screwed up.

“Me,” said Eddie. “I didn’t want to leave any hostages down there after the first time.”

“Who

led

this

mission?”

Lancaster threw back at once.

Eddie frowned, knowing where this was going. “Well, Mark did, but-”

“So you overrode the authority of the agent in charge?”

“No! Technically yes, but-”

“I would have done the same thing,” Mark intercepted. “But I’d have appreciated a heads up first. If I had known what they were doing, I wouldn’t have been taken out. Yes it was a breach of protocol, but for the right reason.”

“I’m sorry Mark.” Eddie sighed.

“Sorry isn’t acceptable!” The volume of Lancaster’s voice escalated.

“This breach could have cost us a damned good agent, one whom I know you all consider a member of your patchwork family.”

“Well why don’t we take a look at how the planning of this assignment failed?” Doug jumped to Eddie’s defense. “If you’d scoped out the area properly before we began, you’d have picked up the scouts Charlie had roaming. If we’d done an audio scoop, we might have learned about the decoy in the basement. No, Eddie didn’t follow correct procedure, but that is far from the biggest screw up of the day.”

Lancaster gaped at the techie.

Jarvis wondered how long it had been since the general had worked in the field. He might have been great at controlling the strings from Head Office, but down here at ground level, he was drowning.

“If Pirini and Ramanui hadn’t let that buffoon out –”

“Then we’d have still been in deep shit.” Jarvis hadn’t meant to say the words aloud, but it was too late for regrets, so he rolled with it. “We all heard the pig say he alerted Charlie before we busted him out. We were sitting ducks either way.”

“He’s right,” said Leon, a smug look on his face. “I heard him say that too.”

“You all think you’re pretty smart, huh?” Lancaster’s black look encompassed his entire physicality. He didn’t like being made a fool of, and worse still, he couldn’t stand they were right. The general had doomed this assignment before it began.

“Look,”

Adam

began

with

reluctance, gaining confidence with each word spoken. “Let’s just get through the debriefing. We can argue about whose fault everything was later. For now we need to get this all on record.”

“Good call.” Doug nodded his approval.

“Forget the rest of the debriefing, just tell me how many globes I need to register and we’ll forget this joke ever happened.”

“One.” Leon’s smug look hadn’t diminished at all.

“Two.” Eddie followed soon after.

“Four,” said Jarvis with a sigh.
